Adding Sections & Sub-sections to Your Course

Just like a “classic” course the content of an online course is divided into several parts, which are subdivided into smaller elements, etc. In Studio, these elements are called SectionsSubsections and Units

The Units are made up of Components (texts, videos, PDF, SCORM module, quizzes…) through which the course content is made available.

Sections, subsections, units and components

  • Sections are comprised of
    • Subsections, which are comprised of
      • Units, which are comprised of
        • Components, each of which can be:
          • Resources
          • Learner Activities
          • Quiz
          • Blended Learning

Sections

The Sections represent the highest category in the course heirarchy. They can, for example, correspond to the weeks of the course or the sequences:  Section 1 will be named Week 1, Section 2 will be named Week 2, etc. The name of the sections appears in the menu to the left of the platform.

Section MinimumRecommended
1Between 4 and 8

SubSections

A Subsection represents one sub-category of a section. That corresponds to one lesson, which is made up of different typs of units such as videos, texts, images, discussions, exercises and homework. It is an interactive representation of material you would cover during one part of a classic course. The name of the subsections also appears in the menu to the left of the platform.

Note:   A subsection should contain at least one unit.

Subsection MinimumRecommended
1Between 5 and 10

Units

One Unit constitutes a supplementary category for organizing your course content. Unlike the sections and subsection, the units do not appear at the left of the platform.

Note:   A subsection should contain at least one component.

Unit MinimumRecommended
1Between 1 and 4
Avoid to do more than that or else navigating will be difficult for the learner as he cannot go back to the previous page from the course outline. The learner can only navigate between the units with the navigation icons at the bottom of the page.

Components

Components make up a unit and contain the course content. There are 4 types of components: Resources, Learner Activities, Quiz and Blended Learning. One unit can contain as many different types of components as desired, but we recommand not to add more than 2 to 3 components.

Resources

Add content to your course, such as text, vide, SCORM module, PDF…

Learner Activities

Train your learners with collaborative activities and/or add discussion forum.

Quiz

Use the exercise problems to add quizzes and automatic corrections. There are several types of quizz that you can add, and many ways of including it in your course.

  • Numerical input
  • Drop-down list
  • Multiple choice question
  • One answer question
  • Text input
  • Image mapped input
  • Drag and drop

Blended Learning

Combine online content with face-to-face or virtual sessions

Reorganizing the structure

You can reorganise the structure of your course very simply by sliding and dropping the Sub-Sections and Sections. You can also duplicate a component and move the component to another unit.
